About this course

This course explains industrial refrigeration vessels and how they are designed, specified, and applied within ammonia refrigeration systems.

It is intended for industrial refrigeration technicians, service mechanics, and engineers who work with or specify pressure vessels in engine room and process refrigeration systems.

Understanding vessel function matters because vessels protect compressors from liquid carryover, provide charge stability, manage oil circulation, and ensure safe operation under varying pressures and temperatures.

The course covers pressure vessel definitions, ASME construction fundamentals, vessel components, sizing based on vapor velocity and rundown capacity, liquid‑vapor separation principles, oil behavior with refrigerants, level control strategies, and special considerations such as PWHT, corrosion allowance, and low‑temperature operation.

ENG 160 fits as a foundational structural course that supports later instruction in system design, inspection, testing, maintenance, and compliance with IIAR standards.
