ENG 320 Mass Balances for IR Systems

This course shows students how to create a mass balance for Industrial Refrigeration Systems.  Using Mass flowrates instead of Tons Refrigeration (TR) results in more accurate sizing of equipment and piping.  In multi temperature industrial systems, a mass balance is the only way to size the equipment.

We begin with a discussion of latent heat of evaporation and refrigerating effect. We show how to use CoolWare to determine enthalpies.  The we calculate mass flows for evaporators, both recirculated and DX.  Using those evaporator mass flows, we will use equations that can be used to solve for all of the mass flows in the engine room equipment.

There is a downloadable workbook that accompanies the lectures, and an Excel Spreadsheet showing how to put the equations into a computer model.  After completion, students should feel comfortable using mass flowrates to select equipment.
